Why I Volunteer

During the Art Fair, I was asked several times by the people I was promoting my handmade postcards to why I was doing what I was doing. I firmly replied that I do it because I want to be part of a movement that will change the relationship of the underprivileged with those who hold the power in the community. I want to contribute to this change by volunteering and VSO has made this possible for me.

I want to work with other people who believe in the same objective and share the same passion. I want to do so because I hate poverty. I hate how it forces ‘excluded men and women’ to endure hunger despite the abundance of resources. I hate watching children work, or worst, beg in the streets when they should be learning in school or playing in their homes. I hate perverts taking advantage of the circumstances of women who were coerced into prostitution. I hate the growing number of inmates who were jailed for crimes like theft, drug dealing, sex or ammunition trafficking, and murder because they were pawed by desperation. I hate how ignorant people are about the proviso of poor people.

Yes, I know. Hate is such a strong (and negative) word but I will not phrase it differently. I will not be a hypocrite about this matter. This is reality and people need to open their eyes.

My fundraising initiative was one of the ways of becoming part of the movement. It became an avenue to raise funds for VSO, as well as, to promote its objectives of overcoming poverty and improving lives of those who are in need.

Every year, organizations like VSO support thousands of volunteers in more than 35 countries around the globe to help in making a difference in people’s lives. The whole agenda is to provide opportunities to work with locals and mobilize them to achieve development goals that have long been disregarded; with the hope that they will be able to stand on their own feet one day.

So, this is why.
